第一次世界大戰爆發後，德軍隨即進侵比利時。根據一八三九年《倫敦條約》，比利時是中立國，而英國有義務保護這國家。因此，英國向德國宣戰。英國遠征軍奉命到比利時，在比利時南部蒙斯市遇上挺進的德軍，寡不敵眾，不久就被迫撤退。英軍說，最令他們痛苦的，是途經比利時一個小鎮時，踩在一幅布上。那幅布寫着一行字：「歡迎英軍，解我倒懸。」
【附注】Outnumber指「數量上勝過」，例如：WomenoutnumbermeninHongKongbyabouttentonine（香港女人以約十比九之數多於男人）。英文動詞之前加out字，有「超過」、「勝過」的意思，讀時重音（accent）多是在動詞上，例如outjump（跳得比……出色）、outlive（比……長命）等。
「英國人」合稱是theBritish。「一個英國人」除了叫aBritishperson，還有aBrit、aBriton、aBritisher等稱呼。不過，不少英國人不喜歡被稱為Brit，Briton也不常用，Britisher則是美語，在英國並不通用。
