In1862,generalGrant,commanderoftheUnionforcesintheAmericanCivilWar,wasdeliberatingwhetherornottoattackFortDonelsonwhenadeserterfromthefortserendipitouslyappearedintheUnioncamp.Amongotherthings,Grantlearnedthatthefort'stroopshadbeengivensixdays'rations.
"Gentlemen,"Grantannounced,"troopsdonothavesixdays'rationsservedouttotheminafortiftheymeantostaythere.Thesemenmeantoretreat,nottofight.Wewillattackatonce."
Grant'scaptureofthefortmarkedoneofthefirstmajorUnionvictoriesintheCivilWar,andopenedupprimeavenuesofinvasiontotheSouth.
一八六二年，美國內戰期間北軍司令格蘭特將軍正在思量應不應該攻打多納爾森堡，恰巧城堡有個逃兵來到北軍軍營。格蘭特從他口中得到一些情報，包括城中軍隊獲配給六天糧食。
格蘭特對部下說：「各位，一個城堡的駐軍，假如有意堅守，不會只獲發六天食糧。他們是準備撤退，不是戰鬥。我們馬上進攻吧。」
格蘭特攻取了多納爾森堡。這是北軍在內戰中最先取得的重要勝利之一，打開了討伐南方的大道。
