第二次世界大戰期間，美國作家兼戰地記者約翰．鞏特爾曾經找一名保密審查員，問空投德國的傳單上寫的是什麼。審查員不肯透露，鞏特爾問原因，他回答說：「我們不得透露任何可能有助敵方的資料。」鞏特爾指出，那傳單已有超過二百萬分空投德國；審查員眨眨眼睛說：「是啊，一定有什麼出錯了。」
據鞏特爾說，戰爭爆發前夕，一名美國記者寫信回國給朋友：「這封信日本信件審查員可能拆閱，未知能不能寄達。」不久，他收到日本郵局通知：「貴函所言不確。本局並不拆閱信件。」
【附注】Censor指書刊等的審查員，可作動詞，指「審查」或「刪剪」，例如：ThecommunistscensoreverythingfromnewspaperstoTVprogrammes（共產黨什麼都審查，包括報紙和電視節目）。
