讀法律文件，頭一句是Knowallmenbythesepresentsthatwe...，請問knowallmen是什麼意思？Bythesepresents為什麼等於bythisdocument（這分文件）？
Knowallmenbythesepresents是很古老的法律界套話，knowallmen可算是倒裝句法（inversion），動詞know置於主詞（subject）men之前，等於letallmenknow（俾各方知悉）。
Present一字，可解作「目前的」，thepresentsituation即「目前的情況」，thesepresents則等於thesepresentwritings（目前所寫的），也就是「這分文件」的意思。例如：BeitknowntoallwhoshallreadthesepresentsthatIamwillingtorelinquishmyclaimtotheproperty（讀這分文件者，當明白我願意放棄該物業的所有權）。
Knowallmenbythesepresents現在常用作法律文件的開端語。有人認為這開端語過時而且不必要，甚至有違男女平等觀念，但至今法律界仍有使用，例如：Knowallmenbythesepresentsthatwe,theundersigned,haveagreedonthefollowingprovisions（以下條款皆經本文件簽署人同意）。
ThePowerofAttorneyshallbeirrevocableuntil7March2007,onandafterwhichdateallpowersherebygrantedshallcease（本授權書二○○七年三月七日之前不得取消；但在該日及其後，所授權力將一律停止）這一句，which不是代名詞嗎？為什麼其後還可加名詞date？
Which除了作代名詞，還可作限定詞（determiner），約等於that/those或「那」，這裏且舉一例：HesuggestedthatIsellmyhouse,whichadviceIfollowed（=andIfollowedthatadvice他勸我把房子賣掉，那建議我接受了）。
