約翰．斯蒂爾爵士獲聘，要為威靈頓公爵在愛丁堡建造騎馬巨像，於是請威靈頓回憶半島戰役和滑鐵盧戰役光榮奏凱的情景，務求賦予塑像威風凜凜的戰爭表情。
斯蒂爾還未滿意，又提議按照威靈頓在薩拉曼卡戰役那天早上的神氣造像：「當時你策馬馳騁沙場，鼓勵將士奮勇對敵。」
威靈頓冷哼一聲說：「假如你真要塑造我當天的模樣，那麼，塑像就應拿着望遠鏡，伏在地上沿戰壕爬行。」
