In1861,AmericanConfederatecommanderJohnMagruder,despiteafondnessforalcoholicrefreshment,absolutelyforbadesoldiersfrombringingliquorintocamp.Oneday,suspectingthatacertainPrivateSharpewastotingaliquor-ladencanteen,heaskedforatasteoftheman's"water".
Takingadraught,hequicklyreturnedthecanteen-andpromotedtheterrifiedprivatetotherankofcorporal.Sometimelater,Magruder,havingtakenanotherdrink,returnedSharpe'scanteenwithanotherpromotion:"YouarenolongerCorporalSharpe,sir.YouareSergeantSharpe!"
Sharpewasdismayed,however,whenhavingattainedtherankoflieutenanthissupplyofalcoholranout.WhenMagrudercalledforadrink,thedejectedSharpereplied,"General,itisplayedout,andIamsorryforit,forifithadheldoutI'llbedammedifIwouldnothavebeenmadeabrigadiergeneralbeforenight!"
一八六一年，美國南軍司令約翰．馬格魯德下令嚴禁將士攜酒進軍營，雖然他自己酷愛杯中物。有一天，他懷疑二等兵夏普所攜水壺盛的是酒，就叫夏普把「水」拿給他喝。
他喝了一口，馬上交還水壺──並把那個嚇得要死的二等兵擢升為下士。又有一天，他喝了一口之後，把水壺交還夏普，並給他再次升遷：「你不是下士了，你現在是夏普中士！」
但夏普官拜中尉之後，酒已喝光了，令他非常沮喪。馬格魯德又向他要水壺的時候，他垂頭喪氣說：「將軍，已經沒有了，真可惜。假如還有，入夜之前我不升做准將才怪！」
