第一次世界大戰結束時，德國代表團謁見法軍元帥兼聯軍總司令福煦，詢問休戰條件。福煦拿起案上文件一分，讀出一連串條款。
德國代表團團長吃了一驚，結結巴巴說：「可是──一定有什麼不對吧。文明國家之間，不可能以這樣的條件相加！」
福煦神情肅穆，回答說：「我很高興聽到這句話。各位先生，這不是我們開的條件，而是里爾市向貴國投降時，貴國司令開的條件。」
【附注】里耳是法國北部城市。Armistice即「休戰」，常指簽署和約之前的休戰安排。第一次世界大戰休戰紀念日叫ArmisticeDay，即十一月十一日。美國把這一天定為VeteransDay（退伍軍人節），以示對退役軍人的尊崇。英國則把最接近十一月十一日的星期天定為RemembranceDay或RemembranceSunday（陣亡將士紀念日），紀念兩次大戰中喪生的軍人。
