美國前國防部長拉姆斯菲爾德對記者說：ItrecallstomindthestatementbyWinstonChurchill,somethingtotheeffectthat"Ihavebenefitedgreatlyfromcriticism,andatnotimehaveIsufferedalackthereof。Somethingtotheeffect和alackthereof是什麼意思？記者說Hecrackedatellingbonmot，那又是什麼意思？
Something除了解作「某事物」，還可用來表示「不肯定」、「大約」的意思，例如：（1）Theanimallookedsomethinglikeatiger（那動物看來有點像老虎）。（2）Heissomethingaroundfifty（他大概五十歲左右）。Totheeffect（that）是常用語，表示「字面未必如此，但意思是如此」，例如：Thepresidentmadeatelevisedspeechtotheeffectthathewouldnotstepdown（總統發表演講，由電視播映，大意是說不會下台）。
Thereof則應是副詞（adverb）thereof之誤。Thereof即ofit或ofthat，例如：Thisbook,oranypartthereof（=oranypartofit）,maynotbereproducedinanyform（這本書或書中任何一部分，都不得以任何形式複製）。
拉姆斯菲爾德那句話是說：「這使人想起邱吉爾所言，大意是『批評者對我裨益良多，我也從來不缺乏批評者』。」
Bonmot本是法文，指「雋語」；crack是「說（雋語、笑話等）」，tocrackajoke即「說笑話」；telling是形容詞，指「顯示真相的」，例如：Whenshesawtheyoungman,atellingblushcametohercheeks（她看見那少年，就面紅頰赤，心事不說可知）。Hecrackedatellingbonmot即「他說的一句雋語透露了心聲」。
