EisenhowerwasfuriousandorderedPattontoapologisetoallhismen.Thoughthegeneraldutifullyassembledhistroops,theloyalmenutterlyrefusedtolethimspeak,cheeringandwhoopingeverytimehetried.Patton'seyeswelledwithappreciativetearsandatlasthesimplyturnedandleft.Thepatientalsoforgavehisgeneral,saying,"Hewassufferingalittlementalfatiguehimself."
一九四三年，巴頓將軍任義大利美軍司令期間，有一天往訪聖雅卡塔醫院，見一個病人似乎完全無恙，下令說：「我要這個人馬上起牀。把他送回前線。我不想真正受傷的人，看見他這樣受到嬌寵。」病人沒有理會他的話，巴頓就一掌打在他臉上，這才驚覺對方患了嚴重彈震症。
艾森豪非常憤怒，命令巴頓向麾下所有將士道歉。巴頓如命召集將士，但忠心的將士根本不許他說話，一見他開口，就齊聲歡呼、高喊。巴頓感動得眼睛含淚，最後一言不發，轉身離去。那病人也原諒了巴頓，說：「他自己都有點精神疲累。」
【附注】Shellshock又稱combatfatigue，是一種戰爭精神病，多由砲彈落在身旁震驚過度引起。
