InAD173,aRomanarmywassurroundedbyaGermanictribe,theQuadi.Unabletofightorretreat,theRomansweredyingofthirstwhensuddenlycloudsgatheredandamightyrainburstuponthem.Allturnedtheirfacesupwardsandreceivedthewaterintheirmouths,andsomehelduptheirshieldsorhelmetstocatchit.TheQuadinowchargeduponthem,anddrinkingandfightingatthesametimetheRomanswouldhavesufferedseverely,hadnotaviolenthailstormandnumerousthunderboltsfallenupontheranksofthefoe.Thuswaterandfireweredescendingfromtheskysimultaneously,sothatwhilethoseontheonesidewerebeingdrenchedanddrinking,theotherswerebeingconsumedbyfireanddying.TheRomans,itseemed,weresavedbyadivinepower.
公元一七三年，一支羅馬軍隊被日耳曼夸廸族人包圍，既不能戰，又不能退，眼看要活活渴死，突然烏雲四合，大雨向他們傾盆而下，他們都抬起頭，張口喝水，有些還把盾牌、頭盔舉起來盛雨。夸廸人這時向他們進攻，羅馬兵一邊喝水一邊抗敵，死傷應十分慘重，但暴風起處，冰雹夾着連綿雷電向夸廸軍隊襲去。一時間，水、火一起從天而降，一邊的羅馬人戰袍盡濕，不斷喝水；另一邊的夸廸人被火焚燒，紛紛死亡。羅馬軍似乎獲神靈保佑，得免覆沒。
