TheBritishretreatfromMonsinsouthernBelgiumatthebeginningoftheFirstWorldWarstretchedthenervesofofficersandmentobreakingpoint.Therewereoccasionswhenchaosreigned,asinthetownofLandrecieson25August,whenaseniorofficerapparentlytookleaveofhissensesandbeganfiringhisrevolverdownastreet.Whenanearbymilitarypolicemanwasaskedwhyhedidnotstophim,hesaidtheofficerwasacolonelandastheonlythingsthatwereindangerdownthestreetwerehorses,includingtheColonel'sown,hethoughtitwasbettertolettheoldgentlemangetitoutofhissystem.

【附注】Take(one's)leave是「辭別」，例如：Hecamefordinnerandstayedtillhalfpastnine,whenhetookleave(ofus)（他來吃晚飯，逗留到九點半鐘，然後（和我們）告別）。Totakeleaveofone'ssenses（辭別理性）就是「發狂」的意思，例如：Haveyoutakenleaveofyoursenses?Howcanyoudoitbyyourself?（你瘋了嗎？這事你怎能獨力去做）System是「系統」，全身器官的配合當然也是個「系統」，togetsomethngoutofone'ssystem即「把某種情緒發洩出來」。
