ThebattleofOtumbain1520wasapivotaleventinSpain'sconquestofMexico.TheAztecsfieldedavastarmyontheplainofOtumbaagainsttheSpaniardsunderHermanCortes.Cortessawinthemiddleofthethronganimportant-lookingpersonagewhoheknewmustbethecommanderoftheAztecs,andimmediatelymadeforhimwithseveralofhishorsemen,chargingthroughtheranksofAztecwarriors.Inafewminutestheywereinthepresenceofthecommanderandkilledhim:hisguard,overpoweredbythesuddennessoftheonset,madelittleresistance.Cortesthenraisedthecapturedbattlestandard,whichtheAztecsbelievedhousedtheirGod.ThelossofthestandardsignalledtotheAztecsthatthebattlestandardflownbytheSpaniardshousedastrongerGod.Filledwithconsternation,theynowthoughtonlyofescape,andtrampledononeanother,theirnumbersaugmentingtheirconfusion.
一五二○年奧登巴之役，是西班牙征服墨西哥旋亁轉坤的一戰。阿茲特克族人派出大軍來到奧登巴平原，迎戰埃爾南．科爾特斯率領的西班牙人。科爾特斯在人群中見到一個看來很重要的人物，知道一定是敵軍統帥，馬上帶着幾名騎兵向他衝去，突破阿茲特克戰陣，不過幾分鐘，就來到那統帥跟前，把他格殺：由於襲擊太過突然，他的衞士手足無措，沒有怎樣反抗。科爾特斯奪得敵軍戰旗，高高舉起。阿茲特克人認為他們的神附在戰旗上，戰旗被奪，顯示西班牙戰旗上的神法力更大。他們滿心驚恐，只想逃跑，互相踐踏，由於人多，更添混亂。
