AmbroseBurnside,AmericanCivilWargeneral,wasnotedforhisineptcommandofUnionforces.DuringthebattleofAntietamin1862,heorderedhistroopstocrossthePotomacRiverinordertoengagetheConfederateforcesinbattle.Theycorrespondinglymarchedacrossthebridgetwoabreast,makinganidealtargetforConfederategunnersflankingthebridge.Notsurprisingly,theslaughterwasappalling.
Burnsidehadfailedtonoticethattheriverwasonlywaistdeep,andcouldeasilyhavebeencrossedalmostanywhereelseinperfectsafety.
安布羅斯．伯恩賽德是美國內戰期間將領，以指揮麾下北軍無方知名。一八六二年安蒂特姆之役，他命令部隊渡過波多馬克河和南軍交戰。士兵於是分為兩排並肩過橋。南軍砲手就排在橋的兩旁，北軍成為他們甕中之鱉，傷亡慘重。
伯恩賽德沒有發覺的，是波多馬克河深僅及腰，幾乎任何一處都可以毫無危險涉水而過。
【附注】伯恩賽德除了以領軍無能著稱，其濃密的連鬢頰鬚也膾炙人口。Sideburns（頰鬚）一字，就是脫胎自Burniside。例如：Itoldhimtoshaveoffhisheavysideburns（我叫他把濃密的頰鬚剃掉）。
Inept是「笨拙的」或「無能的」，例如：Insteadofhavingourcarrepaired,theineptmechanicfurtherdamagedit（那技工很無能，沒有把我們的汽車修理好，反而弄得更糟）。英文本來沒有ept（靈巧的、機敏的）字，近人取inept而作ept，但這個字遠遠沒有inept那麼通用，一般字典都不收錄。
