In1812,theUnitedStatesdeclaredwaronBritaininresponsetoBritain'sblockadeonhershippingduringtheNapoleonicWars.ThewarsawBritishtroopsenteringandsackingWashington.AswellasburningtheWhiteHouse,theyalsoburnedtheLibraryofCongressandtheofficesoftheNationalIntelligencenewspaper.AdmiralCochranehadaparticularscoretosettlewiththepaper,whichhadvilifiedhiminprint.Heorderedhismentoscattertheprintingtype,shoutinggleefully,"BesurethatalltheCsaredestroyedsothattherascalscannotanylongerabusemyname."
一八一二年，美國不滿英國在拿破崙戰爭中封鎖美國船運，向英國宣戰。戰爭期間，英軍攻入華盛頓，大肆劫掠，除了火燒白宮，還縱火燒國會圖書館以及《國民信息報》辦公室。海軍上將科克倫曾被這份報紙詆毀，更加要跟他們算帳。他下令手下把印刷用的鉛字撒在地上，欣然喊道：「所有『科』字都要毀掉，切勿放過，這樣，那些流氓就再也不能侮辱我的名字。」
【附注】這場英美戰爭互有勝負，到一八一四年十二月兩國簽署和約，才告結束。
Sack作動詞，常指軍隊、強盜等洗劫某地，也可作名詞，例如：ThesackofNankingbythebarbariansin1937turnedthecityintohell（一九三七年，蠻夷洗劫南京，把這城市變成地獄）。Score作名詞，可解作「欠帳」，常引伸解作「積怨」，成語Deathpaysallscores即「一死了百債」或「死者已矣，舊恨勾消」。Tosettleascore就是「算帳」。
