Trainingnewrecruitsintheuseofthemusketwasanindispensablepartofsoldiering,thoughrarelycanithavebeenasdangerousasitwasforGeneralJeanMalherofNapoleon'sarmyin1808.PuttingtherecruitsthroughtheirpacesMalherorderedthemtofiretheirblanks.Unfortunatelyhegotinthewayofthevolleyandwastransfixedbyaramrod:eighteensoldiershadfailedtoremovetheirramrodsfromthebarrelsbeforefiring.
OnanotheroccasionduringmanoeuvresatLeghornin1804aFrenchsoldierfiredhisramrod,whichaccidentallykilledacivilianspectator.Luckilyforthesoldierthevictimturnedouttobeabrigandwantedbythepolice.
訓練新兵使用毛瑟槍，是從前軍旅生涯不可免的工作，一般都不怎麼危險，一八○八年拿破崙軍中將領讓．馬萊的遭遇卻是例外。馬萊當時測試新兵，命令他們發射空彈。大家開槍時，他不巧走到射程之內，被一枝推彈桿射中：有十八名士兵開槍前忘了拿出推彈桿。
又法軍一八○四年曾在來亨演習，一名士兵射出推彈桿，意外奪去一個旁觀平民的性命。那士兵算是走運：死者原來被警方通緝，是個土匪。
