TheancientcastleofColditzineastGermanywasusedduringtheSecondWorldWartoholdAlliedofficerswhohadrepeatedlyescapedfromothercamps.ItwasdeclaredbytheGermanstobe"escape-proof",andhadmoreguardsthanprisoners.Inprinciple,theguardsrecognisedthatitwasthedutyofthePOWstotrytoescape,whiletheirowndutywastostopthem.Prisonerscouldevenformgentlemen'sagreementswiththeguards,suchasnotusingborrowedtoolsforescapeattempts.Unsuccessfulescapeeswerepunishedwithsolitaryconfinementinsteadofexecution.
Whennottryingtoescape,thecastle'sinmatesoccupiedtheirtimeinbizarreways.TheFrench,forexample,builtmousetanks.Thetanksweretoy-sized,madeofwoodandoperatedfromtheinsidebyamouserunningroundawheel.Itwasevenpossibletostagemousebattles.
