BritishnurseEdithCavell,aWorldWarIheroine,wasmatronoftheBerkendaelMedicalInstituteinBrussels,Belgium,whentheGermanarmyinvadedthecountryin1914.BerkendaelsoonbecameaRedCrosshospitalforwoundedsoldiersregardlessoftheirnationality.InAugust1915,CavellwasarrestedbytheGermansandchargedwithhavinghelpedabout200alliedsoldierstoescapetotheneutralNetherlands.Afternineweeks'solitaryconfinement,shewascourt-martialled,foundguiltyandsentencedtodeath.

英國護士愛廸絲．卡維爾是第一次世界大戰中的女英雄。一九一四年，德軍侵佔比利時，她正在比國布魯塞爾貝肯達醫學院任護士長。不久，貝肯達醫學院成為紅十字會醫院，專門治療傷兵，不分國籍。一九一五年八月，卡維爾遭德軍拘捕，罪名是曾協助約二百名同盟國士兵逃往中立的荷蘭。她被單獨囚禁九個星期之後，軍事法庭判她有罪當死。
卡維爾槍斃前一晚，告訴監獄的牧師：「愛國是不夠的。我必須對任何人都無所怨恨。」

Heroine是hero的女性拼法。不過，受到「男女平等」觀念影響，今天也有人用hero稱「女英雄」，就像actor不再限於指「男演員」，也可以指「女演員」（actress）。
