DuringParaguay'swaragainstArgentina,BrazilandUruguayinthe1860s,thecourageoftheParaguayanswaslegendary.Ononeoccasion,GeneralJoseDiazdecidedtodisplayhisabsolutecontemptforhisenemiesbyfishinginacanoeinfullviewoftheBrazilianironcladwarships.Oneofthewarshipsopenedfireonhimandseverelyinjuredoneofhislegs.Diazmanagedtoreachtheshore,bleedingprofusely,andthesurgeonwasobligedtoamputatetheleg.
FollowingtheexampleoftheMexicanpresidentSantaAnna,whohadhisamputatedlegburiedwithfullmilitaryhonoursin1838,Paraguay'spresidentLopezpresentedDiazwiththeamputatedleginitsowncoffin.
一八六○年代，巴拉圭和阿根廷、巴西、烏拉圭三國作戰，巴拉圭將士的勇氣傳誦人口。有一次，何塞．廸亞斯將軍為了表示完全不把敵人放在眼內，公然坐獨木舟在巴西鐵甲戰船之前釣魚。一艘戰船向他開火，廸亞斯一條腿被重創，血如泉湧，狼狽回到岸上，軍醫不得不切除那條腿。巴拉圭總統洛佩斯把那條腿用棺材盛着送還廸亞斯：這是效法墨西哥總統聖安納。一八三八年，聖安納用軍事儀式為自己一條切下來的腿舉行隆重葬禮。
【附注】巴拉圭總統洛佩斯狂妄獨裁，企圖侵略鄰國以壯聲威，結果兵敗身死，巴拉圭在這場五年戰爭之中人口減半。Ironclad是「裝甲的」，常用來比喻「不能改變的」或「牢不可破的」，例如：Thatisanironcladproofofhisguilt（那是他犯罪的鐵證）。
