TheDutchWarofIndependencefromSpainlastedforsomeeightyyears,from1567to1648.IntheearlydaysthewarwasmarkedbyaseriesofdisastersfortheDutch,nonemoreseverethanatthebattleofJemmingenin1568,whenmanyfleeingDutchsoldiersdrownedintryingtocrosstheEmsRiver.ItissaidthatnewsoftheDutchdefeatwascarriedonthetidetotheburghersofEmdenatthemonthoftheriver,wherethousandsofbroad-brimmedfelthats,thenormalheadgearoftheDutchinfantry,wereseenfloatingbylikesomestrickenarmada.
荷蘭人反抗西班牙統治，發動獨立戰爭，歷時約八十年，由一五六七年開始，一六四八年結束，初期連番失利，一五六八年耶姆明根一役傷亡最為慘重，潰逃者要渡過埃姆斯河，不少葬身魚腹。據說，荷軍敗陣的消息，隨潮水漂到河口的埃姆登市，市民看見數以千計闊邊氈帽流過，像一支殘破的艦隊：荷蘭步兵平常都戴這種氈帽。
【附注】一六四八年，西班牙簽署威斯特法利亞條約（TreatyofWestphalia），承認荷蘭獨立。
荷蘭的正式名稱是theNetherlands（尼德蘭），「荷蘭」（Holland）其實只是尼德蘭西北部地區的名稱。這地區是尼德蘭新舊國都阿姆斯特丹和海牙所在，至為重要，所以Netherlands俗稱Holland，留意Netherlands之前習慣用冠詞the，並配單數形式動詞，例如：TheNetherlandswasoccupiedbyGermanyinWorldWarII（第二次世界大戰期間，荷蘭被德國佔領）。
