查第四版《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》，thereby是「藉以；從而」的意思，例句是Theypaidcash,therebyavoidinginterestcharges（他們付現金，以免要付利息）。這thereby是不是有因果含義？貴欄可以談談thereby的用法嗎？
Thereby是副詞（adverb），常用來說某事引起的結果，當然「有因果含義」，例如：Theyblewupthebridge,therebystopping/andtherebystoppedtheenemy'sadvance（他們把橋炸毀，使敵人不能前進）。不過，這個字一般見於嚴肅的文件，用於普通寫作，會顯得生硬，最好用this、which、it、and等取代，例如：Theypaidcash,andavoidedinterestcharges、Theyblewupthebridge,which（或andthis）stoppedtheenemy'sadvance。
以下兩句，一錄自RudolfFlesch的TheABCofStyle（寫作入門），一錄自JHaroldJanis的ModernBusinessLanguageandUsageinDictionaryForm（現代商業英語及用法詞典）：（1）Theoriginalargumentforatax-reductionbillwasthatabusinessrecessionwouldtherebybeavoided（減稅議案的本來論據，是可藉此避免工商業衰退）。（2）Iftheadvertisercancelsthecontract,hetherebyforfeits（假如廣告商取消合同，得付代價）。Flesch指出，第一句that之後宜改為itwouldavoidabusinessrecession；Janis也指出，第二句hetherebyforfeits改為heforfeits就可以了。
除了hereby，therein、thereon、thereafter、hereto、wherefrom等「副詞（adverb）＋介系詞（preposition）」複合字，都少見於現代英文，不宜隨便使用。
