ThenTailleferputhishorsetoagallop,chargingbeforealltherest,andstruckanEnglishmandead,drivinghislancebelowthebreastintohisbody.Thenhedrewhisswordandstruckanother.TheEnglishpushedforward,andsurroundedandslewhim.Thusthebattlebegan.
一○六六年十月十四日，英格蘭王哈羅德二世和諾曼第公爵威廉戰於黑斯廷斯。是役揭開了諾曼人征服英國的序幕。諾曼軍隊逼近英軍時，威廉公爵的樂人塔耶費爾高喊：「主公，我侍奉左右多年，今天要求賞賜：請准許我最先出擊。」公爵回答：「我答應你的要求。」
塔耶費爾策馬疾馳，率先衝向敵陣，長矛插入一英兵胸口之下，取了他生命，隨即拔劍，直砍另一英兵。英軍一擁上前，把他包圍格殺。戰役就這樣開始了。
【附注】一○六六年，威廉公爵率軍，由法國諾曼第渡過英倫海峽，進攻英格蘭。英王哈羅德剛在北方擊退挪威人侵略，倉卒提軍南下迎戰，將士疲乏，大敗於黑斯廷斯，哈羅德陣亡，威廉於是席捲英格蘭，登上王位。歷史學者公認黑斯廷斯之役是英國歷來最重要的戰役之一。
