BeforehisattackonQuebec,BritishgeneralJamesWolfestoodmutelyinoneoftheforemostboats.Suddenlyhebegantospeakinalowvoice.ThegereralwasrecitingGray's"ElegyinaCountryChurchyard",whichhehadonlyjustmemorised.Hisaideslistenedquietly.Wolfefinishedandsaidsoftly,"Gentlemen,IwouldratherhavewrittenthoselinesthantakeQuebec."Anembarrassedsilencefollowed.ItmightbethatWolfehadsomepremonitionofthefatethatwasshortlytobefallhim.Bybrilliantstrategy,heroutedtheFrench,butdiedofhiswounds.
一七五九年魁北克之役，是法印戰爭之中最重要的一戰。法印戰爭的結果，是英國取代法國控制了加拿大。
英軍將領詹姆斯．烏爾夫進攻魁北克之前，默默站在最前列的一條船上，忽然低聲說話，原來是在吟詠剛會背誦的一首詩：格雷的《墓園輓歌》。他的副官都靜靜聽着。烏爾夫背完了，輕聲說：「各位，能夠寫下這樣的詩篇，對我來說，勝過拿下魁北克。」跟着是一陣尷尬的沉默，也許，烏爾夫對即將降臨的命運有點預感。他憑着出色的戰術，大敗法軍，但自己也傷重去世。
【附注】英法爭奪北美殖民地期間，有印第安部落協助法國，所以英國人稱這場七年戰爭（1754-1760）為「英印戰爭」。
