一三四六年，英、法在克雷西交戰，十六歲的威爾斯王子率領一師英軍，和法國武士短兵相接，一度似乎會落敗。王子的父親愛德華三世當時駐蹕高處，一名武士奉命去請他率大軍增援。愛德華問：「我兒子是不是死了，是不是從馬上摔了下來，是不是傷得站不起來了？」
那武士回答：「都不是，謝天謝地。」
「那麼，湯瑪斯爵士，回到派你來這裏的人身邊，告訴他們說，只要我兒子還活着，我就不會來。那孩子必須自己建立功勳。」
【附注】Spur是「馬靴刺」，古時戰士因功獲封為騎士，叫做towinone'sspurs，後來引伸解作「建立功勳」。愛德華的話，激起英軍鬥志，終於打敗了法軍。
