Thesoldierobviouslydidnotrecognisehiscommandernorunderstandhisquestion,forhereplied,"Thebeehives,sir,areoverthathill.Butyouhadbetterhurrybeforetheyhaveallbeentaken."
威靈頓在英、法半島戰爭之中任英軍司令，其間他麾下的士兵漸漸精通取之於民用之於我。有一次，威靈頓親自碰到一名士兵偷了個蜂巢，抱着在路上走，走得十分吃力。
威靈頓問：「喂，老兄，蜂巢是哪裏來的？」
那士兵顯然不認得他的指揮官，也不明白威靈頓這個問題的含義。他回答說：「老兄，蜂巢在山的那邊。你最好快點走，遲了，恐怕都被拿去了。」
【附注】Adept是「精通」或「熟練」，其後習慣用in或at帶出精通的事情，例如：Hewasadeptin/atcopywriting（他擅長撰寫廣告）。Adept也可用來形容技巧，例如：Hispaintingsareremarkablefortheadeptuseofcolours（他的油畫，色彩運用精妙，殊足稱道）。
Liveoff指「靠……過活」，常帶貶義，例如：Helivedoffhiswifeallhislife（他一生都靠老婆養活）。說士兵liveoffthecountry，是指靠當地出產的糧食過活。本文的liveoff當然帶「非法取得糧食」含義。
