八月三日香港雅虎網站"AWordaDay"（一日一字）專欄教授laylow一詞，例句是Hedecidedtolaylowforawhileuntilhisfriendforgotthathehaddamagedhiscar（他決定沉寂一會兒，待朋友把他毀壞汽車的事遺忘）。這一句laylow二字用得正確嗎？
這句英文有兩個錯誤，一是forawhile，一是laylow。
Awhile是副詞（adverb），可修飾動詞，意思是「片刻」或forashorttime；awhile則是名詞，可用在介系詞（preposition）之後，意思是「一段時間」或foraperiodoftime，例如：（1）Let'ssleepawhile（我們小睡一下吧）。（2）Let'ssleepforawhile（我們睡一會兒吧）。Youwillseeitinawhile（你一會兒就會看見）這一句，不可寫作inawhile；Hedecidedtolaylowforawhile也應改作Hedecidedtolaylowforawhile/tolaylowawhile。
但tolaylow這裏也用錯了。Tolaylow一般指「使病倒」或「使倒下」，tolielow才是「沉寂」或「隱蔽」，例如（1）Hewaslaidlowbytheflu（他患感冒，病倒了）。（2）Ilaidhimlowwithablow（我一拳把他打倒了）。（3）Theserialmurdererlaylowfortenyears,andmanycametobelievethathewasdead（他連續謀殺多人之後，蟄伏十年，很多人都以為他死了）。讀者示下那一句，tolaylow就應改為tolielow。
Lay（放置）的過去式、完成式是laid、laid；lie（躺）的過去式、完成式則是lay、lain。兩字意思、用法完全不同，必須分辨清楚。
