一八四八年，墨西哥戰爭結束，威廉．特庫姆塞．謝爾曼將軍奉命到新墨西哥、亞利桑那兩地視察。這是美國從墨西哥人手上奪得的領土。
謝爾曼視察後回來，泰勒總統問他覺得新增的領土怎樣，值不值得打那場戰爭。謝爾曼想到他剛剛離開的亁旱土地，回答說：「這一點只可以你知我知：我認為得再打一場。」
泰勒大吃一驚，失聲問：「為什麼？」
謝爾曼說：「否則墨西哥人不會把那他媽的土地拿回去。」
【附注】Darn者，damn也。Damn本是「使下地獄」的意思，從前算是個非常無禮的字，印刷上會變成d-n或d***，口頭上則會變成darn、dratted、dashed等，以免令人不快。今天，其他四字母詞勃興，damn的威力大不如前，往往可以直說無妨，darn等變體就顯得過時了。
