In1704,justafterwinningthebattleofBlenheim,Marlboroughobservedasoldierleaningthoughfullyonthebuttofhisfirelock,andaccostedhimthus:"Whysosad,myfriend,aftersogloriousavictory?""Itmaybeglorious,mylord,"repliedthefellow,"butIamthinkinghowmuchbloodIhavespilledthisdayforfourpence."Fourpencewasaprivatesoldier'sdailypayatthattime.
馬爾伯勒公爵在西班牙王位繼承戰爭（1701-14）中率領英荷聯軍，多次擊敗法王路易十四的軍隊，使路易不能主宰歐洲。
一七○四年，萊尼姆之役勝利後，馬爾伯勒看見一個士兵倚着燧發槍托，若有所思，就上前問那士兵：「朋友，這一仗贏得那樣漂亮，你為什麼還那樣憂鬱？」那士兵回答：「公爵，這一仗也許贏得漂亮，但我在想，為了四便士，我今天手上染了多少血。」當時二等兵每天的工資是四便士。
