Ononeoccasion,astheBritishmarchedthroughasmallmarkettown,theinhabitantslinedthestreetsandwindows,andshouted"VivalosIngleses(LonglivetheEnglish)!"untilsomeofthemwerequiteexhausted.Onewomancameoutofherhouseinagreathurry,andbegantoshout"VivalosFranceses(LonglivetheFrench)!"Apparently,theSpaniardsusedtocheertheFrenchaswellastheBritisharmy,butthewomanhadforgottenwhicharmyitwas,andperhapstoheritwasoflittleimportance.
半島戰爭期間，英、法軍隊在西班牙鄉間此進彼退，隨時變易，當地人要弄清楚佔領者是哪國軍隊，並不容易。
有一次，英軍走過一個集市小鎮，鎮上居民夾道沿窗歡呼「英軍萬歲」，有些叫得聲嘶力竭。一個女人匆匆由家裏走出來，高喊「法軍萬歲」。很明顯，那些西班牙人既向法軍歡呼，也向英軍歡呼，只是這個女人忘了眼前的是什麼軍隊。也許，對她來說，哪國軍隊都是一樣。
【附注】半島戰爭的「半島」，指愛比利亞半島（IberianPeninsula），即葡萄牙、西班牙所在的半島。拿破崙領導法國期間，英、法在愛比利亞半島競爭，由一八○八年開始，至一八一四年法軍敗退結束，史稱「半島戰爭」。Markettown是鄉間定期舉行集市的小鎮。
