TheAmericancampaigninCubawasparticularlychaotic.DuringtheattackonSanJuanHill,theAmericantroopshadtheassistanceofahot-airballoon,fromwhichalieutenant-colonelwassupposedtospotenemypositions.Itwasamostill-judgedact.ForiftheSpanishdefendershadanydoubtsastowheretheAmericantroopsmightbeinthejungle,theballoonservedtogiveawaythepositionsoftheAmericans,andtheSpaniardsrespondedbyrakingtheareaaroundtheballoonwithshrapnel.NooneintheAmericanrankscouldreturnthefireorevenseewhereitwascomingfrom.
一八九八年西班牙美國之戰，結束了西班牙對古巴的統治，美國則奪取了菲律賓、波多黎各、關島。戰爭暴露了兩國軍事上顢頇無能。
美軍在古巴作戰，行動尤其紊亂。他們進攻聖胡安山，借助熱氣球，上載一名中校，負責尋覓敵人陣地。這樣做極不明智。西班牙守軍要是不能肯定美軍在叢林裏的行蹤，那麼，熱氣球給他們標出美軍位置，他們就用榴霰彈掃射氣球附近地方。美軍沒有一人能夠還火，甚至射擊來自哪裏都看不見。
