要問「你為什麼不……？」英文是Whydoyounot...?還是Whydonotyou...?又Whydon'tyou...?這說法正確嗎？
Whydoyounot...?和Whydon'tyou...?兩個說法都正確。照道理，don't既是donot的縮寫，則Whydonotyou...?這說法應該也沒有錯，但實際上卻不行，原因在於「約定俗成」四字，此外不能解釋。Whydon'tyou...?是比較隨便的說法，例如：Ifyoureallylovethecountry,whydoyounot/whydon'tyoucondemnthecommunists,whohavereducedourcountrymentothird-classcitizens?（假如你愛國，為什麼不譴責共產黨？他們把我國國民貶作三等公民）。
上述否定式問題（negativequestion）的句式，其他輔助動詞（auxiliaryverb）也合用，例如：（1）Areyounot/Aren'tyoudeceivingyourselfwhenyousaythatthecommunistsrepresenttheinterestsofChina?（你說共產黨代中國求福祉，是不是在欺騙自己？）（2）Willyounot/Won'tyoulistentothevoiceofconscience?（你不聽良心的呼喚嗎？）
香港人說的「單單打打」，英文怎麼說？例如「她單單打打，令人惱怒」。
「單打」即「嘲諷」，英文可譯作ironical、sarcastic、satirical等。Irony是「反話」，不一定令人難堪，例如倒楣的時候自嘲Fortunedoesfavourme（我蒙幸運之神眷顧）。Sarcasm則是有意令人難堪的反話，例如老闆對遲到的職員說：Youmusthavegotupearlythismorning（你今天早上一定很早起牀）。Satire則是對愚頑醜陋事物的諷刺。讀者那一句可譯作Herironical/sarcastic/satiricalcommentsaremostannoying。
