TheBritishregularsoldierintheNapoleonicWarshadatoughnessthatwasproverbial.Hewasintolerantofthosewhodidnotsharehisstoicisminthefaceofsuffering.Onesuchsoldier,awaitingtreatmentinaBritishfieldhospital,wasangryatthescreamsofaFrenchcasualtylyingalongsidehim.AssoonastheFrenchman'sarmhadbeenamputated,theBritishsoldierseizedtheseveredlimbbythewristandhittheFrenchmanasharpblowwithit,saying,“Here,takethat,andstuffitdownyourthroatandstopyourdamnedbellowing.”
拿破崙戰爭期間，英國正規兵堅忍卓絕，家喻戶曉。他們對不能吃苦的人毫不假借。一個正規兵在英軍野戰醫院等候治療，見身旁躺着的法國傷兵連聲尖叫，很不耐煩，一待那法國人的手臂切了下來，就抓住那斷臂的手腕，提起斷臂重重打了那法國人一下，說：「來，嘗嘗這個。把這東西塞進咽喉，就不會他媽的大叫大嚷了。」
【附注】Proverb是「諺語」；諺語流傳人口，所以proverbial有「膾炙人口」的意思，例如：HewasfascinatedbytheproverbialsplendouroftheAlps（阿爾卑斯山非常壯觀，天下傳誦，他也為之着迷）。
Stoicism本是古希臘哲學家芝諾（Zeno）所創學派，以堅忍、冷靜為教。芝諾在廊下授業，而希臘文稱「廊」為stoa，這就是學派名稱的由來。今天，stoic常用來說堅忍、禁慾者，也可作形容詞，例如：Hefacedeveryadversitywithastoic/stoicalattitude（他面臨逆境總是抱堅忍態度）。
