ThebattleofPaviain1525,betweentheFrenchandtheSpanish,markedtheendofthesupremacyofthearmouredknightinthefaceofcannonandfirearms.DuringthebattlemanyheavilyarmouredFrenchknightsmetunpleasantendsatthehandsofSpanishfusiliers.LaTremoillewasparticularlyunfortunate.ASpaniardliftedtheironflapsguardinghisthighsandthrustinanarquebus,blowinghimtopiecesinsidehisarmour.Saint-Severin,themasteroftheFrenchking'shorseguards,hadthetopofhisheadseveredbyaswordblowbutremaninedfixedinhissaddle,whilehishorseracedmadlyabout.Hisbodywasriddledwithoverahundredshotsbutnothingcoulddislodgehim.ThesuperstitiousSpanishsoldierscrossedthemselvesinfearastheindestructibleFrenchmanrodeby.
一五二五年，法國和西班牙戰於帕維亞。是役出動大砲、槍枝，渾身甲冑的武士從此再也不能橫行。不少身披重甲的法國武士，在這場戰役裏都死在西班牙燧發槍兵手上。拉特雷莫勒最不幸：一個西班牙士兵拉起他大腿的鐵甲，一枝火繩槍塞進去，把他盔甲內的軀體轟得支離破碎。法王騎兵護衞隊長聖塞夫林的頭蓋則被一劍削去，但身體仍穩坐鞍上，胯下戰馬四處狂跑。他全身中了百多槍，但始終不掉下來。那些迷信的西班牙士兵見到這個不倒的法國人騎馬走過，都很惶恐，紛紛在胸前虛畫十字。
【附注】帕維亞是義大利北部一個城市。當時法國和西班牙在義大利爭霸，帕維亞一役，法軍大敗，法王弗蘭西斯一世更被俘虜。
