一九一四年對德戰爭爆發,英國人表達愛國熱忱的方式五花八門。任何源自德國的東西,都蒙上嫌疑。以下文字錄自一九一四年八月十八日《每日鏡報》:「昨天,我在河濱大道橫街碰到一隻很小的達克斯臘腸狗:這種狗大概可稱為德國國犬。那小狗身上盛飾紅、白、藍緞帶,快快活活在街上走,脖子上戴着一個圈,上書:『我入了英籍。』牠看來還因此自豪得很。」
【附註】Strand是倫敦市中區一條主街。AnythingofGermanoriginimmediatelybecamesuspect的suspect是形容詞,不可改作動詞suspected。請比較以下兩句:(1)Hismotivewassuspect(他的動機可疑)。(2)Hismotivewassuspected(他的動機受到懷疑)。Bedeck指「用……裝飾」,動詞deck也有這個意思,二字往往適用,但deck之後可以加out,bedeck卻不可和out連用,例如:Thestagewasdecked(out)with/bedeckedwithflowers(舞台用鮮花裝飾)。
