DuringthedefenceoftheLucknowResidencyintheIndianMutinyof1857,allkindsofunusualitemswereusedtoconstructbarricades.Someworksofgreatliterature,completewithleatherbindings,servedtoholdtheSepoysatbay.OnoneoccasionjustonehundredpagesofacopyofLardner'sEncyclopaediastoppedamusketball,whileByron'sCompletePoems,althoughsufferingcompletedestructionintheprocess,stoppedacannonball.Apparently,soimpressivewerethedefensivequalitiesofsuchheavyreadingthatFinancialCommissionerMartinGubbinswishedthateverydoorcouldbeprotectedbybooks.Ontheotherhand,unboundorientalmanuscripts,atthehouseoftheFrenchmerchantDepratt,provedincapableofstoppingmusketshotsandwereconsumedbyfire.
一八五七年印度兵變，勒克瑙市英國總督特派大員管轄區在防衞戰中出動各式各樣古怪東西建築防禦工事。一些偉大文學作品裝幀完好，以皮革作封面，抵住了印度兵。一本拉德納《百科全書》，只一百頁就把一顆毛瑟槍彈截住；拜倫《詩歌全集》，更擋了一枚砲彈，只是全書也告粉身碎骨。這些重量級讀物防守力甚強，難怪財政事務官馬丁．格賓斯希望每一道門都有書籍掩護。不過，在法國商人德普拉特家裏，沒有裝訂的東方書稿卻不能抵住毛瑟槍掃射，着火焚燒。
【附注】Bay可指獵犬的吠聲。Hold/Keepatbay原指「使獵狗不能接近」，引伸解作使敵人等不能接近，例如：Hisstrongwillkeptdeathatbay（他憑堅強意志，力拒死神）。
