Thesoldierdidashewastold,onlytoseehissocksdisappearinaswirlingrushofwater.Hisexplanation,thenextday,wasacceptedbyawearyofficer,whobythatstagehadseenandheardjustabouteverything.
一九一四年英國來自鄉間的新兵遇上不少問題，例如抽水馬桶就令一些人大為困惑。一個士兵長途行軍訓練回來，想在馬桶裏洗襪子，動手之後，發覺要多點水，向同袍請教。同袍說：「拉那鏈子吧。」
那士兵如言一拉，只見一股水流旋轉而出，把襪子沖得無影無蹤。第二天，他向軍官解釋。那軍官所見所聞這時已是無奇不有，也懶得理會了。
【附注】留意onlytoseehissocksdisappear這句式。英文常用「onlyto＋原形動詞（infinitive）」來說做了一件事之後的不如意結果，例如：（1）Thepolicetracedhimtohishideout,onlytofindthathehadbeenkilled（警察追蹤到他藏身地點，卻發現他已遭殺害）。（2）Iracedtothebusstop,onlytoseethebuspullingaway（我跑到巴士站，只見巴士開走了）。
