AttheoutbreakoftheFirstWorldWarin1914,manyoftheBritishsoldiersfromfarmingcommunitiesbilletedinthetownshaddifficultyadjustingtotherefusesystemusedintownsandcities.Accustomedtoarubbishpitasasuitableplaceforhouseholdwaste,theywereatalosstounderstandthefunctionoftheurbandustbin.Assumingthatacontainerofthatsizemustbeintendedforaweek'ssupply,manyofthembrewedupdustbinsfulloftea,whilecontinuingtothrowtheirrubbishintothegardensoftheiriratelandlords.
一九一四年第一次世界大戰爆發時,有出身農村的英國士兵獲安排到鎮上人家住宿,但對城鎮的垃圾處理系統,往往難以適應。他們習慣把家庭廢物棄置垃圾坑中,不明白城市垃圾桶的用途,以為這樣大的桶,一定是供一個星期用量,不少人於是用垃圾桶泡滿茶,垃圾則繼續拋到主人家的園子裏,令主人家七竅生煙。
