TheAmericanwarsagainsttheIndiansinthelate18thcenturywereextremelysavage.AtthebattleofFallenTimbersin1794AmericancaptainAsaHartshornwasseparatedfromhismenandsurroundedbyIndians.Hedefendedhimselfwithhishalberdagainsttheenemyuntiltheydespairedofbeingabletotomahawkhimwhilealive.Oneofthemfiredanarrowintohischest,whichkilledhiminstantly.TheIndianswerefilledwithadmirationforthebraveofficerwhohadfallen,andputtwoheartsmadeoutofleatherintoanincisiontheymadeinhisbreast,astestimonythathehadcourageenoughfortwomen.
十八世紀末葉，美國對印第安人的戰爭非常兇殘。一七九四年法倫廷珀斯之役，美軍上尉阿薩．哈茨霍被印第安人包圍，和部下隔絕，持戟奮戰，印第安人見始終無法用戰斧把他砍死，一人就發箭射中他胸膛，當場奪命。他們對這位勇敢軍官十分敬佩，取皮革裁成兩個心形，剖開他胸膛放進去，表示他有兩個人的勇氣。
【附注】Hehadcourageenoughfortwomen這一句，courageenough可改作enoughcourage。Enough一般用在名詞之前，置於名詞之後是比較文雅的寫法，例如：Doyouhaveenoughmoney/moneyenough？（你的錢足夠嗎？）
此外，foolenough（蠢得）、manenough（有男子氣概得）、gentlemanenough（有紳士風度得）等說法，習慣不用冠詞a或the，例如：Hewasmanenoughtostanduptothedictator（他是個男子漢，不怕對抗獨夫）。留意manenough等不可改為enoughman。
