In1900,theBritish-heldtownofLadysmithinAfricawassubjectedtoafour-monthsiegebyBoerforces.Inspiteofthecontinualbombardment,theLadysmithgarrisonpursuedtypicalBritishpastimeslikecricket.AcricketpitchwassetupinsightoftheBoergunsonBulwanaRidge.OnoneoccasionColonelRawlinsonwitnessedabizarreincident:"IspentafewidlemomentswatchingtheImperialLightHorseplaycricket.TheykeptamantowatchtheBoerguns,andwhenhesawtheflashheshouted,'Hereshecomes.'Thebatsmanpretendedtoplaytheshellwhen,tohisastonishment,itlandedonthepitchaboutthreefeetfromhim.Theconcussionknockedhimdownbuthewasnotabithurt."
一九○○年，英軍扼守非洲史密斯夫人城，被波爾軍隊圍攻了四個月。城內駐軍經常受到砲擊之餘，就玩板球之類典型英國遊戲，在布瓦納山脊的波爾砲兵眼底，設立板球場。羅林森上校有一次目睹一件古怪小事：「我閑着，隨便看看皇家輕騎兵玩板球。他們派了個人看着波爾軍的大砲，見到火光一閃，就喊：『來了！』那擊球員裝成要把砲彈擊回去的樣子，不料砲彈落在球場上，離他只有三英尺左右，把他震倒地上，但他絲毫無損。」
【附注】所謂Boer（波爾人），指南非荷蘭移民的後裔。他們兩度和英國衝突，史稱BoerWars（波爾戰爭）。第二次波爾戰爭一八九九年爆發，一九○二年結束，英軍奏凱。
Continual是「斷斷續續的」，和continuous（不斷的）不同。例如continualrain是時下時歇的雨，continuousrain則連綿不住。
