In1741,theMarathageneralRaghujilaidsiegetotheFrench-heldtownofPondicherry.TheFrenchgovernorDumassentapresentoftenbottlesofliqueurstoRaghuji,whogavethemtohiswife.
Theladywassoimpressedbytheliqueursthatsheinsistedthatherhusbandacquiremore,whateverthecost.Raghujiwasthusplacedonthehornsofadilemma:hewasmostunwillingtoreducehisdemandsonPondicherry,yetmoreliqueurswouldhavetobegainedotherwisehiswifemightproveimpossibletolivewith.HehadtoagreetobeginnegotiationswiththeFrench.Finally,hewithdrewhistroopsandlefttheFrenchinpeace,ladenwithagoodsupplyofliqueurs.
一七四一年，馬拉地將領拉古吉圍攻法國佔領的本地治里市。法國總督杜馬以甜酒十瓶相贈，拉古吉都交了給妻子。
他妻子非常欣賞那些甜酒，叫丈夫無論如何都要多求一些。拉古吉陷入了兩難之局：他不想減少城下之盟的條件，但酒又不可不多求，否則和妻子一起的日子會很難捱。他不得不和法國人談判，最後載着大量甜酒，撤軍而去，當地法國人重見太平。
〔附注〕這個故事發生在印度。馬拉地王國創於一六七四年，勢力遍及印度南部和中部，後來被英國征服。
