新香港政務司長許仕仁最近致詞說：Itain'toveruntilthefatladysings,astheysay；又說cutthenosetostunttheface。那是什麼意思？
我沒聽過cutthenose等等，只聽過cutoffone'snosetospiteone'sface。Spite作動詞，指「跟……作對」，例如：Heturneduptheradiotospiteme（他和我作對，把收音機聲音開大）。「割去鼻子跟面孔作對」，就是「為了賭氣而做不利自己的事」，例如：Hewassoangrywithhisemployerthatheresigned.Butitwasacaseofcuttinghisnosetospitehisface,becauseathisagehecouldnotpossiblygetanotherjob（他不滿僱主，憤而辭職，其實對自己不利，因為年紀已大，難再覓得職位）。
Itisn'tovertillthefatladysings是說「事情一刻未告終，一刻還有轉機」。據一九七八年六月十三日《華盛頓郵報》（WashingtonPost）說，美國聖安東尼奧市（SanAntonio）一個叫丹．庫克（DanCook）的報紙體育版編輯模仿Therodeoisn'tovertillthebullridersride（牛仔競技會要到騎牛者表演才告結束）一語，寫成對句：theoperaisn'tovertillthefatladysings（歌劇要到胖女郎演唱才告結束）。現在，這成語常用來勉勵競賽中居劣勢者，例如：Withhisnosebleeding,theboxerbracedhimselfforanotherround."Itisn'tovertillthefatladysings,"hesaid（那拳師鼻子流血，仍然振起精神，準備打下一回合，說：「不到最後，勝負還未可料。」）
