我最近致函顧客提出問題，以Couldyoupleasetellme（未知可否賜告）起句，但上司認為tell帶命令意味，不夠客氣，宜改為advise，先生認為怎樣？
這個tell只是「告訴」的意思，根本沒有命令意味。至於tell、advise兩字哪個較好，請看AWainwright的BusinessCorrespondenceforHongKong第五章：Avoid"Kindlyadviseus".Sayinstead"Pleasetellus"（「請賜告」不宜說kindlyadviseus，宜改說Pleasetellus）。GrahameTBilbow的BusinessWritingforHongKong第一篇也叫人不要用advise這種businessjargon（商業術語），宜用tell、letusknow、say之類normalEnglish（日常英語）。
Advise一字有什麼不好？英語學者GodfreyHoward的TheGoodEnglishGuide說：Wehaveallreceivedlettersbeginning"Wearegladtoadviseyouof...","Ihavetoadviseyouthat...",andtheysoundasifsomeoneislookingovertheirpince-nezatus."Inform"or"notify"arelesspontificalor,ifamorefriendlywordiscalledfor,there'stheshortOldEnglishword"tell"（有些書信起句就說Wearegladtoadviseyouof或Ihavetoadviseyouthat，大家一定都讀過。來信者似乎戴着夾鼻眼鏡揚起眼睛盯着你。Inform、notify二字也可解作「告訴」，卻沒有advise那麼浮誇。要語氣親切一點，還可用tell這個簡短的古英文字）。此外，JHaroldJanis的ModernBusinessLanguageandUsageinDictionaryForm也說"Advise"isaformal,sometimesstiltedsynonymfor"inform","notify","write"or"tell"（Advise是inform、notify、write、tell、的同義詞，語氣拘謹甚至生硬）。我不必再說什麼了。
