Ononeoccasion,acompanymajorwasgivingareadingatchurchparade.HisbroadYorkshireaccentamusedsomeofthemenandwhenhereadthewords“sufferedunderPontiusPilate,oneofthemen,aknownwag,muttered,“What'sPonchewsPeelatt?”Theofficerheardthecomment,andturnedtolookattheculprit.“Uptoyouroldtricksagain,areyouJock?”ThemajorsummonedJocktoadrumheadcourt-martialatwhichhewassentencedtoonehundredlashes.Oncethefloggingwascompleted,themajorreturnedtohistext,“NowwherewasI?Oh,that'sright...sufferedunderPontiusPilat.”
十八世紀期間，英軍常行笞刑，用刑原因有時非常荒謬。
有一次，軍隊上教堂禮拜，某連的少校讀經，濃濃的約克郡口音令一些士兵感到好笑。他讀到「在龐修斯．比拉多手下受折磨」等字，一個愛講笑見稱的士兵咕咕噥噥說：「什麼是龐丘斯皮拉？」那少校聽到了，轉頭望着這罪人：「喬克，又玩你的老把戲啦？」他當場召開軍事法庭，喬克被判鞭笞一百下。打完之後，那少校繼續讀經；「我讀到哪裏？啊，對了……在龐修斯．比拉多手下受折磨。」
【附注】比拉多是猶太總督，負責審判耶穌。Churchparade是軍隊依規定上教堂禮拜的時間，drumheadcourt-martial則是即時的軍法審判，例如：Hewasconvictedatadrumheadcourt-martial（他在當場召開的軍事法庭上被判有罪）。
