Onalittlesideroad,nearlyinthecentreofthecarnage,wasaTommyprivate,withaVickers,mountedforack-ack,pouringfirefromaredhotbarrelateveryplanethatpassed.Rightinthecentreoftheroadhestayed,nocamouflageandnofear,andhisanswertoallandsundrywas,"Thebloody—swillneverthinkoflookingformeintheopen,andIwanttoseeabloodyplanebroughtdown."
一九四一年十二月，日軍寇馬來半島，直搗新加坡英軍基地。日本砲兵向多個目標轟擊，日本戰機也時而出動轟炸，炸得鬼哭神號。受傷者垂死者的尖叫，令最勇敢的人都膽戰心驚。
這場大屠殺的中心附近有條小路，路上一個英兵架起防空維克斯機槍，向每架掠過的飛機開火，槍管熱得通紅。他就守在路中心，沒有偽裝，沒有畏懼。無論誰人相問，他的答案都是：「那些他娘的ｘｘ鬼決不會想到我身在毫無遮掩的地方；我要把他娘的一架飛機打下來。」
