HeledtheattackontheDanishfleet.EventuallytheBritish,withNelsoncommandingthesmallervesselsthatborethebruntoftheengagement,destroyedthegreaterpartofthefleet.
一八○一年哥本哈根戰役中，大象號戰船上的賀瑞修．納爾遜是海軍上將海德．帕克爵士手下。帕克爵士是個很謹慎的統帥。當時他的旗艦發出39這個信號表示休戰，納爾遜對福利上校說：「福利，我只有一隻眼，失明有時是我的權利。」他拿起望遠鏡，放到瞎了的眼睛前，喊道：「我真的看不見那個信號。」
他率領戰艦進攻丹麥艦隊。最後，英軍殲滅了丹麥大部分戰艦，而納爾遜指揮的較小型戰艦更是戰鬥的主力。
