Twodayslaterhewasvisitinghisbrigadehospitalwhenhenoticedsomeprisoners,oneofwhomhadhadhisarmamputated.OnseeingCliffordtheRussiansmiledandwavedhisuninjuredarm,explainingthroughaninterpreterthatCliffordwasthemanwhohadcutoffhisarm.Apparentlyheborethemajornoillwillatall.
一八五四年，克里米亞戰爭爆發，交戰雙方一是俄國，一是英、法、土耳其聯軍。一八五五年英克曼之役，英國騎兵少校休．克利福德驅馬躍過矮樹叢，赫然看見兩名俄國騎兵就在面前。他策馬撞倒一人，並揮劍砍傷另一人手臂，全身而退。
兩天後，他到軍旅醫院探望，看見有些俘虜，其中一人切除了一隻手。那俄國人見到克利福德，含笑舉起沒有受傷的手，向他搖了搖，經由翻譯員解釋說，他一隻手就是克利福德砍斷的。他對克利福德顯然一點都不懷恨。
