ConditionsforfightingontheWesternFrontintheFirstWorldWarwereoftenverybad,particularlyintheregionofFlanderswheretheBritishtroopswerebased.In1917,whentheBritishattackedtheGermanline,thedrainagesystembrokedownandthewholeareawasflooded.Theartilleryshellschurnedthegroundupintoliquidmud.ApartyofBritishsoldierspassinguptothefrontlinefoundamanboggeddowntoabovetheknees.Theunitedeffortsoffourofthemwithriflesbeneathhisarmpitsmadenottheslightestimpression,andtodigwasimpossible,fortherewasnofoothold.Dutycompelledthemtomoveon.
Twodayslater,theypasseddownthatway.Thewretchedmanwasstillthere,butonlyhisheadwasnowvisibleandhewasravingmad.
第一次世界大戰期間，西部戰線環境惡劣，特別是英軍駐守的法蘭德斯地區。一九一七年，英軍進攻德國防線，排水系統毀壞，整個地區被水淹沒，而砲彈更把土地打成泥漿。一隊英軍開赴前線，看見一人雙膝以下都陷在泥中。四人合力用來福槍架住他左右腋窩，要把他抬起，但絲毫無功，而且由於沒有立足點，也不能挖掘救人。他們任務在身，最後只有繼續前進。
兩天後，他們又路過這地方。那可憐人還在泥中，但現在只露出頭部，人也瘋了。
【附注】這是第三次伊普爾之役（thirdbattleofYpres）裏的小故事。是役英軍死者三十多萬人，得地不過八公里。喪身泥漿者數以千計。
