查字典，「文化震盪」是cultureshock，為甚麼不說culturalshock？
「文化震盪」是指置身另一種文化之中所感到的震撼。論文法，cultureshock大可改為culturalshock，正如governmentdecision（政府決策）大可改為governmentaldecision。不過，cultureshock是約定俗成說法，比culturalshock常見得多，例如：Foramanasrichashewas,visitingtheslumcouldbesomethingofaculturalshock（對他這樣富有的人來說，探訪貧民窟未必不是一次文化震盪）。
看電視劇《24》，常聽到covertoperation（秘密行動）、clandestineconversation（秘密談話）等，卻不見說secretoperation/conversation。Secret和covert、clandestine有甚麼分別？
說「秘密的」，secret是最普通用語，你絕對可以說secretoperation或secretconversation。Covert、clandestine也可解作「秘密的」，但covert和cover（遮蓋）一字同源，有「掩藏」、「掩飾」含義；clandestine則常帶「違法」、「犯禁」或「不道德」意味，例如：（1）Ibelievedhehadsomecovertreasonsforopposingmyplan,thoughhedeclaredthatmoneywashisonlyconsideration（他反對我的計劃，自稱着眼點只在金錢，但我認為有些原因沒有說出）。（2）Theyhavemadeaclandestineplantoassassinatethepresident（他們陰謀行刺總統）。這兩句改用secret也可以。
Covert的反義詞是overt（公然的、明顯的），例如；Weepingisanovertmanifestationofgrief（哭泣是悲哀的公然流露）。
