一九○四年提峨多．羅斯福競選總統期間，有代表團由另一個州來到長島牡蠣灣，登門造訪。羅斯福迎客，外衣不穿，雙袖捲起，對他們說：「各位，請和我到糧秣倉去，我可以一邊工作，一邊跟大家傾談。」
羅斯福走到糧秣倉，拿起乾草叉，四望找尋乾草。他向兒子喊道：「約翰，乾草哪裏去了？」
約翰在乾草閣上高聲回答：「對不起，愛荷華州那些人來訪的時候，你把乾草叉了上來，我還未有時間再次扔下去。」
【附注】羅斯福一九○○年出任美國副總統，總統馬京利遇刺身亡後，他就任總統，一九○四年競選連任成功。第二次世界大戰時期的美國總統羅斯福是他侄兒。
