WhilefishinginalakenearPeterswald,EastPrussia,aFrenchsoldierhookedsomethingheavyandbroughtacorpsetothesurface.Furtherinvestigationproducedthenakedbodiesofthirty-sevenFrenchsoldiersandonewoman,allobviouslykilledintheirsleepbyhatchetblows.Theyhadbeenreportedmissingandwerethoughttobeprisonersofwar.Peterswaldwassurroundedandsearched;theiruniformsandweaponswerefound.Thirty-eightvillagerswereshotandthevillageburned.
一八○七年，拿破崙率領法軍在德意志和普魯士、俄國軍隊作戰。
一名法國士兵往東普魯士彼德斯沃爾村附近湖上垂釣，釣到一些很重的東西，拉上水面，原來是具屍體。繼續追查，找到三十七名法國士兵和一名婦人赤裸的遺骸，各人顯然都是在睡夢中被小斧頭砍殺的。法軍曾經接到他們失蹤的報告，以為他們被敵軍俘虜了。彼德斯沃爾村被包圍搜索，法軍找到死者的軍服和武器，最後槍斃了三十八名村民，並把村莊燒了。
【附注】英式英文burn（燒）的過去式和完成式是burnt或burned，美式則是burned。不過，無論英美都以burnt（燒過的）作形容詞，例如：Throwtheburntsausagesintotherubbishbin（把燒焦的香腸丟進垃圾桶裏去吧。）另一例子是成語Aburntchilddreadsthefire（曾經燒傷的孩子，看見火會懂得懼怕）。
