坂井三郎是日本天皇海軍出色的飛行員，曾經擊落六十四架美國、澳洲、荷蘭戰鬥機，第二次世界大戰之後，造訪美國二十多次，和不少當年他要殲滅的飛行員見面結交。
坂井三郎和那些美國飛行員不同，從來沒有獲得獎章或其他勳章，只有一次例外：一九七一年他參加美國空軍英雄協會聯誼活動，在高爾夫球錦標賽中擊敗美國飛行員，贏得小獎牌。
坂井三郎後來批評日本的侵略：「是誰下令發動這場愚蠢的戰爭？你追本溯源，越是接近天皇，事情就越是變得模糊。戰後，天皇應該下臺，削髮為僧，退居寺院，負起責任。」
